How did you start the first time in the import export business?

On December 1979 I got a phone call from a guy who was referred to me by a mutual friend. He told me as follows: "Hey, I am looking to get an exclusive Car Agency to Israel, preferably, low cost, does not matter where from. Can you help?"

To be perfectly honest, I didn't have a clue but you must admit, it is an interesting challenge, so I responded by saying "let me check a number of venues and I'll let you know within the 2-4 weeks whether I can assist you".





At that point in time (mind you - no internet) the available search roads where Trade Organizations, Chambers of Commerce, and Economic Attaches at Embassies. For whatever reason, I decided to look for a relatively close (geographically) region which was Eastern Europe.

This region started to "open up" to the west and my instincts drove me to look there. I arranged meeting with Economic Counselors representing Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. On my first meeting with the Polish Diplomat I had a Bingo. At that time they had a car manufacturer named Polonez who has been established for the Polish Government by FIAT. They where, at that point in time, looking for international markets in order to get foreign currency.

To "cut a long story short" I assisted in establishing my friend's request within less than 6 months and this opening provided me with a market place which was very eager to receive western products. This was my very first import/export successful venture.

Our Business Partners will vote and decide which are the ones to dominant the next year's trade.
